The Department of Higher Education of Chandigarh Administration has established an enviable reputation for excellence through consistent emphasis on adoption of innovative teaching methodologies, provision of cutting-edge technologies and up-gradation of infrastructure in all its institutions of higher education.
There are nine Government Colleges and seven Grant-in-Aid Colleges under the purview of the Department of Higher Education, Chandigarh Administration. These include five Government degree colleges, of which two, namely PGGCG Sec-11 and PGGC Sec-11 were established in the 50's and have been designed on the pattern set by the architect Le Corbusier. PGGCG Sec-42, PGGC Sec-46 and GCCBA Sec-50, were established in the second phase of the growth of the city and have since been instrumental in providing conventional as well as modern specialized courses to meet the demand of the job market. Three colleges are devoted exclusively for imparting education in Home Science, Yoga, Health and Education. Government Home Science College Sector-10 is a pioneer professional institute in Home Science in Northern India, it was established in 1961. The State Council of Educational Research and Training and the Regional Institute of English impart training to in-service teachers.
Likewise there are six Grant-in-Aid degree colleges and one College for Education, which are contributing to the upliftment of Higher Education in UT Chandigarh.
Keeping abreast of innovations in teaching methodologies worldwide, the teaching faculty of all the colleges have been developing e-Content on topics related to the curriculum of various streams.
To enable teaching through the latest audio visual aids, the colleges are having Smart Classrooms equipped with LCD Projectors, Digital Podiums and Amplifiers, etc. Exclusive Information Technology Blocks with cutting-edge facilities like sophisticated computer labs, Leased-line/Broadband internet connectivity and IT integrated pedagogy, etc. are being provided to students and staff.
Personality Development and Soft-Skill courses through workshops have been introduced for the students to groom them and to hone their communication skills. College facilities are put to optimum use through various Hobby Classes, Computer Literacy courses and Communication skills programs. Emphasis is also laid on the add-on job oriented and vocational courses for bridging the gap between the curriculum and job market needs. The colleges have active Career Guidance and Placement Cells, which organise seminars and workshops by inviting professionals from the industry. Campus placements through Job Fests benefit many students as they get employment offers from reputed organizations.
The Youth of our country need to be not only knowledgeable and employed, but also responsible citizens. Stress is being laid on inculcating the spirit of social service in our Youth by motivating them to participate in community outreach programs. Students are encouraged to enrol in various clubs and societies being run by the colleges, such as Drug De-Addiction Society, Environment Society, Gender Equity Society, Best out of Waste Society, Community Hygiene & Sanitation Society, Society for Preservation & Protection of Heritage,Road Safety and Traffic Awareness Society and AIDS Awareness Society, etc.
